Our Point of View

Good evaluation work is both rigorous and human.

A report should do more than document test scores. It should explain the student's everyday experience, identify meaningful needs, and offer useful guidance.

Independent judgment

Clinical conclusions guided by evaluation findings—not by a predetermined outcome.

The whole child

An understanding of strengths, environments, development, and real-world participation.

Clarity in action

Clear communication and recommendations families and teams can actually use.

Frequently asked questions

A few helpful answers.

What is an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)?

An IEE is an evaluation completed by a qualified professional who is not employed by the public agency responsible for the child's education. Under federal special education rules, a parent may request an IEE at public expense when they disagree with a public-agency evaluation, subject to the applicable requirements.

Do you offer private-pay evaluations?

Yes. Private occupational therapy assessments can be tailored to the referral question and are separate from district-funded IEEs. Scope, fees, and availability are discussed before scheduling.

Do you work with charter and independent schools?

Consultation and private evaluations may be relevant to students in public, charter, and independent private-school settings. Funding for an IEE at public expense depends on the public-agency evaluation and applicable rules—not simply the type of school a student attends.

Where do you provide services?

SAM OT & Consulting focuses on Santa Barbara, Ventura County, and the greater Los Angeles area. Specific assessment locations and travel arrangements depend on the engagement.
